Short Stories by Stephen Crane
Stephen Crane (1871–1900) was born in Newark, New Jersey, the youngest of 14 children to a Methodist minister. Raised in a religious household, he later rebelled against its strictures. Crane attended military school, developing an early interest in the Civil War, but left college to work as a freelance writer, immersing himself in the poverty of New York City’s Bowery, which inspired his early realistic work.
